FRENCH BULLDOG – BREED INFORMATION

Breed Origin

The French Bulldog was developed in France during the 1800s, originating from small English bulldogs that accompanied lace workers to France. Through selective breeding, they evolved into the charming, compact companion we know today — adored for their expressive faces, playful personalities, and affectionate nature.

General Appearance

A small, muscular, and well-balanced dog with a smooth coat, compact build, and distinctive “bat ears.” The French Bulldog presents strength without heaviness and elegance without exaggeration. Its unique expression — intelligent, alert, and full of character — makes it one of the world’s most recognizable breeds.

Size

  • Weight:

    • FCI standard: up to 14 kg (30 lbs) for males, slightly less for females.

    • AKC standard does not specify a limit but emphasizes balance and proportion.

  • Height at the withers typically ranges 10–13 inches (25–33 cm).

Coat & Variations

The breed comes in a variety of luxurious coat types and designer colors, making each French Bulldog truly one of a kind.
Recognized coat types and colors include:

  • Classic short coat: Brindle, fawn, cream, pied.

  • Exotic/designer variations: Blue, lilac, chocolate, merle, platinum, and isabella.

  • Full Fluffy (long-haired): a rare and highly desirable genetic variant, producing a soft, plush coat while retaining all the breed’s structural correctness and compact build.

Temperament

French Bulldogs are affectionate, intelligent, and playful, known for their even-tempered and loyal nature. They thrive on human companionship and are happiest as part of a family. Despite their compact size, they are courageous and confident, yet gentle with children and friendly toward other pets.

Movement

Smooth, free, and powerful — showing stability and balance. They move with purpose, not hurried, with no exaggeration in stride.

Health & Care

  • Life expectancy: 10–14 years.

  • Prone to certain sensitivities due to their flat-faced structure; care should be taken in extreme heat or humidity.

  • Regular cleaning of facial folds, nail trimming, ear checks, and bathing are essential for maintaining their well-being and signature good looks.

  • A balanced diet and controlled weight are key for joint and respiratory health.

Ideal For

  • Urban living or apartments (minimal barking, low exercise needs)

  • Families and singles seeking a loyal, low-shedding companion

  • Those who appreciate an expressive, fashionable, and loving breed with a big personality in a small body
